How to Renew your Security Guard Licence

Updated: Aug 1

Renewing your security guard licence shouldn't be hard. We wanted to make it easy for you so we've done the hard work of having conversations with Alberta Justice and Solicitor General to clarify exactly what you need to do to renew your Alberta Security Services licence.

Here's a clear step-by-step procedure on how to do it! You can use this process up to 90 days after your licence has expired. Since you're technically not permitted to work with an expired licence, we suggest you renew it a month or two in advance to prevent any issues with your employer or Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. If your licence is 90 days beyond the expiry, you must apply for a new security guard licence.

A. Gather the following information together:

1. Your current licence (up to 90 days past the expiry)

2. Complete and sign the Individual Licence Renewal portion of the PS3723 - Renewal Application Form

3. Proof of Identification

  1. If born in Canada, a copy of either:

    1. Canadian Birth certificate

    2. Valid Canadian passport

    3. Native Status Card

  2. If born outside of Canada, a copy of either:

    1. Canadian Citizenship document

    2. Valid work or study permit

    3. Permanent resident card

    4. Valid Canadian passport

Note that non-Canadian identification documents will NOT be accepted. If you are mailing in your application, provide photocopies of the front and back of your documents.

3. 1 current colour passport photo (2 3/4" x 2")

You can get one done at many places, such as London Drugs or Costco.

4. Original complete Police Information Check documents including:

  1. CPIC/ National

  2. Vulnerable Sector

  3. Local Database

You can request this online here: https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/pics Note that this costs $76 and these documents expire after 90 days.

5. Baton training certificate only if seeking authority to carry a baton.

Recertification is required every 36 months. If you are mailing your application, provide a copy of your baton recertification training certificate.

6. Application fee of $100 + additional processing fees

General Information about the Security Services Licence

Your renewed licence is valid for 2 years, or to the expiration of your work/study permit. You are responsible for ensuring it gets renewed before it expires as you are not permitted to work with an expired licence. Your individual licence is portable, which means your licence is still valid if you change employers or if you work for multiple employers.
