If you need to either add or recertify your Use of Baton as a qualification on your Security Services licence in Alberta, this article explains the different scenarios and steps to follow.
The use of baton is typically only required for specific job functions, as requested by your employer. It is not necessary for all security guards positions, so check with your employer first. You are permitted to go through the training and have the class added to your licence regardless of your employment, however, in order to carry a baton on the job you MUST also have approval from your employer.
The Alberta Security Services and Investigators Act states that in order to use a baton in a security function, you must take an approved 40 hour training course and apply to have this added as a qualification on your licence. A security guard is not permitted to use a baton on the job until they have received their updated licence ID card in the mail. The expiry date on the licence will not change.
Applying for Baton and Security Licence together
If you haven't yet applied for your Security Services Licence, and have also completed the 40 hour baton training, you can apply for both the licence and the Use of Baton qualification on your licence at the same time on the application form. Please read How to Apply for your Security Licence.
Note: You must apply by mailing your application directly to the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General if you are including baton. You will not be able to take it to a registry.
Adding Baton to your Existing Licence
If you already have your Security Services licence and have completed your approved training, you will need to apply for an update to your licence to have Use of Baton added as a qualification to your licence. Download the Update to Individual Licence form below, fill it out and mail it directly to the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General (you will not be able to use a local registry). The expiry date on the licence will not change.
Renewing your Baton Qualification on your Licence
The Alberta Security Services and Investigators Act requires recertification for baton every three (3) years. You must take the approved recertification or certification training, then recertify your Use of Baton qualification on your licence.
Important note: The governing body for the training program (HFRG) requires recertification annually. If you wish to wait the three years before retraining, you will need to complete the full training program again to qualify to recertify on your licence.
Download the Update to Individual Licence form below, fill it out and mail it directly to the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General (you will not be able to use a local registry). The expiry date on the licence will not change.
